I like your analysis but I think you should factor in the constant drumming and open declaration by the collective West about regime change and breaking up Russia.

Why should Putin announce any succession in that context?

As a specialist in Russian history myself and someone from the Global South I tend to see their point of view more than excoriate them constantly

The international angle on domestic succession decisions is an interesting one, and certainly relevant! I'm not convinced that's the reason why no succession plan has been forthcoming (esp given the timing of the quiet 'uncertainty' debates in Russia just before the 2020 constitutional amendments), but it's definitely something to keep in mind. Announcement of a succession plan is simply not in keeping with the Russian political ethos of wartime. They are now bracing for constant regime change efforts. The Prigozhin drama shows how ruthlessly the CIA is going ahead. We have to be realistic on this. Personally I see Dmitry Medvedev a challenger to Putin as the war drags on.
